Beginner Violin Lessons

The beginner violin course is a very small group course usually consisting of only two to four students per class.

Goals for the Course

Students will learn to perform exercises and pieces in first position and gain an understanding of the following basic technical and theoretical concepts:

  1. Parts of the violin
  2. Correct posture including holding the bow and violin
  3. Physical understanding needed to stroke the strings correctly
  4. Basics of meter and rhythm
  5. Basics of note reading for the violin
  6. Major scales in first position; difference between whole tones and semitones
  7. Applying the movable do sofa system to scales and music
  8. Using drones and ostinati
  9. Introduction to minor scales and other modes

Materials Required

  1. Violin (appropriate for your size)
  2. One shouder pad (the Kuhn model or a sponge and elastic band)
  3. One copy of my book Fiddle Music for the Violin ($25)
  4. One copy of the Suzuki Violin Method, Book 1
  5. One three-ring binder with floppy covers
  6. Writing paper and pencil
  7. Positive attitude and enthusiasm.
